What Is WPM and How Is It Calculated?
WPM (Words Per Minute) is the standard measure of typing speed. But it doesn't count actual words — it uses a standardized formula:
WPM = (Total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ Time in minutes
The "5 characters = 1 word" convention exists because word lengths vary. This standardization makes WPM comparable across different texts and tests. Only correctly typed characters count toward your final WPM score.
Average Typing Speeds
Here's how different typing speeds compare:
- 20–30 WPM — Hunt-and-peck typists. Looking at the keyboard frequently.
- 30–40 WPM — Average casual typist. Gets the job done but not fast.
- 40–60 WPM — Above average. Comfortable with most typing tasks.
- 60–80 WPM — Proficient touch typist. Great for office work and writing.
- 80–100 WPM — Excellent. Professional-level speed.
- 100+ WPM — Exceptional. Competitive typing territory.
The world record for typing speed is over 200 WPM. Most professionals who type all day average 65–75 WPM.
How to Use Our Typing Test
- Open the Typing Speed Test
- Choose your test duration: 15, 30, or 60 seconds
- Click the typing area to focus it
- Start typing — the timer begins automatically with your first keystroke
- Type the displayed text as fast and accurately as you can
- When time runs out, see your results: WPM, accuracy, correct characters, and errors
Pro tip: Use the 60-second test for the most accurate measurement. The 15-second test is great for a quick check but can be more variable.
How to Improve Your Typing Speed
1. Learn Touch Typing
Touch typing means typing without looking at the keyboard. Your fingers rest on the "home row" (ASDF JKL;) and each finger is responsible for specific keys. This is the single biggest improvement you can make.
2. Focus on Accuracy First
Speed follows accuracy. If you're making lots of errors, slow down. A steady 50 WPM with 98% accuracy is better than a chaotic 70 WPM with 80% accuracy — you'll spend less time fixing mistakes.
3. Practice Regularly
Even 10 minutes a day makes a difference. Consistency beats intensity. Take the test daily and you'll see steady improvement over weeks.
4. Maintain Good Posture
Sit up straight, keep your wrists neutral (not angled up or down), and position your keyboard at elbow height. Ergonomics directly affect typing speed and reduce fatigue.
What the Test Measures
- WPM — Your typing speed in words per minute (correctly typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes).
- Accuracy — Percentage of characters typed correctly out of total attempts.
- Characters — Total number of characters you attempted.
- Correct — Characters typed correctly (these count toward WPM).
- Errors — Incorrectly typed characters. You can use backspace to correct mistakes.
Real-Time Feedback
As you type, you'll see:
- White characters — Correctly typed.
- Red characters — Incorrectly typed (with underline).
- Blinking cursor — Shows your current position.
- Live WPM counter — Updates every moment so you can pace yourself.
Privacy
The test runs entirely in your browser. No keystrokes are recorded or sent anywhere. Your results are not stored on any server. It's just you, your keyboard, and JavaScript.
