ToolKnit’s own desktop-derived engine reads both text and drawing instructions. It preserves difficult regions instead of claiming everything is editable.
Paragraphs, columns and supported tables
Positions and font information help rebuild reading order. Recognized table cells can become real Word cells when the layout passes the engine’s checks.
Keep original-page geometry
Fixed-page mode prioritizes original positions. This is useful for reports and forms, but it is different from a freely reflowing Word document.
Local processing, explicit limits
Conversion runs on your device. Fonts can change between editors, complex areas can remain images, and scans are not supported.

PDF to Word questions, answered
Can I convert a PDF to an editable Word file for free?
Yes. Open a supported text-based PDF, choose the pages and layout, and download a DOCX without signup or a watermark. Device safety limits and the shared daily usage allowance still apply.
Will my PDF be uploaded?
No. This converter reads and processes your PDF in the browser. It downloads its processing components, but does not send your PDF, password or converted document to ToolKnit or an AI provider.
Does PDF to Word preserve formatting?
Keep original pages prioritizes the PDF’s page dimensions and content positions. Supported text and tables are rebuilt, while difficult regions may remain images. Font substitution and different Word editors can change the appearance; exact formatting is not guaranteed.
Can I convert scanned PDFs or photos to Word?
No. OCR conversion is currently unavailable. Pages without supported visible text are not exported by this tool. For mixed files, select the text-based pages. Use PDF to Image if you only need page pictures.
Will tables become editable Word tables?
Some recognized tables can become native Word tables. Complex borders, merged cells, special backgrounds or uncertain text can require positioned text or image preservation instead. Check important cell values and alignment in the downloaded document.
Are mathematical formulas editable?
Complex formulas are normally preserved as local images in this web converter. The presence of an equation in the DOCX does not mean it is an editable Word equation.
What is the difference between original pages and A4 mode?
Original-page mode retains the source page sizes and prioritizes positions. A4 mode reorganizes supported content onto A4 pages, so page count and spacing can change. If a layout cannot fit safely, use original-page mode.
Can I choose a page range or open a password-protected PDF?
Yes. Choose pages such as 1-3, 5. If the PDF needs an opening password, enter the password for a document you are authorized to use. PDFs that prohibit copying are not converted.
Why does the DOCX look different in my editor?
PDF places content at fixed coordinates, while Word also uses fonts, line metrics and layout rules. Missing fonts, different editor behavior and longer edits can shift content. Reopen the file and inspect every important page before sharing it.
Is this a DOC or DOCX converter?
The output is DOCX, the modern Word document format, not the older binary DOC format. Use a Word-compatible editor to open it; compatibility and layout should be checked in the editor you use.
Can I convert a PDF with more than 300 pages?
The input budget is 256 MiB on desktop or 128 MiB on phones and low-memory devices, with up to 10,000 source pages. You can select up to 3,000 pages on desktop or 1,000 on smaller devices. The converter builds DOCX parts containing at most 1,000 or 200 source pages respectively, and reduces groups when accumulated content reaches its memory budget. These are admission budgets, not a guarantee for every PDF. Scans remain unsupported.
