What is an Instagram Grid Post?
An Instagram grid post (also called a puzzle post or nine-grid) is a technique where you split one large image into 9 separate photos and post them in order. When viewed on your profile, the 9 posts combine to form one large, panoramic image across your 3-column grid. It's a powerful way to make your profile stand out.
How It Works
- Open the tool —Go to Image Grid Split.
- Select your image — the tool preserves the full rectangular source and divides it into three rows and three columns. It does not automatically crop to square. Crop a copy first if square tiles are required.
- Preview the grid — nine tiles cover the source once. Dimensions not divisible by three produce neighboring tiles that differ by one pixel, rather than losing the remainder.
- Download as ZIP —Get all 9 tiles numbered in order (1-9, top-left to bottom-right).
- Check the destination grid — a newest-first square grid may need reverse order (9, 8, 7... 1). Profile thumbnail ratios, pinned posts and reorder features can change the visible result; the tool does not control Instagram.
Preview before publishing: check all 9 tiles and the current profile layout. Scheduling and ordering features depend on the account and platform; posting quickly does not guarantee engagement or a permanent mosaic.
Best Practices
- Plan source resolution — a 3240 × 3240 source produces nine 1080 × 1080 tiles. This is an arithmetic example, not a universal Instagram minimum or guarantee that profile thumbnails stay square.
- Choose the right content —Landscapes, group photos, product showcases, and typographic designs work best.
- Plan your grid —Consider how each tile looks individually in the feed, not just as part of the mosaic.
- Choose the intended shape — non-square input stays rectangular. Use a square crop before splitting only when your destination needs square tiles.
